Remote Agent

What is artificial intelligence?

What are the distinguishing characteristics of agents as opposed to a "normal" program?

What distinguishes a remote agent from a regular computer program is a tricky question. It can be answered as:

"Nothing at all. Agents are simply computer programs, just like any other."

Or it can be answered by:

"It's a program that takes orders stated in the form of a goal, like 'Take a picture of an asteroid,' rather than in the form of a procedure, like 'Turn on your rocket, fly for 6 seconds in a certain heading, and then turn on your camera and take several pictures.'"

Other scientists may say that it is a program that has enough knowledge to react to, and solve, problems itself, without external input and still succeeding at its goals.
